St Croix Island: We stop for refreshments just off this island which is home to 50 000 African penguins. We enjoy close-up views of penguins. We often see Bottlenose Dolphins feeding close to the island. Dolphins, gannets and other sea birds may be seen on the 25km trip to the island. After a short overview of the history and ecology of the island we take off for the next leg of the cruise.
Jahleel and Brenton Islands
We also visit these smaller islands in a journey that takes us past the site of the future Coega harbour, Bluewater Bay and North End Beach before sailing back to the PE harbour. Schools of dolphins and resident Bryde's Whales may be seen on this stretch, and Humpback Whales (June/July, and October/December) and Southern Right Whales (June/October) may be sighted in season.
Dolphin facts
Close encounters with Bottlenose Dolphin schools of 50 to 400 animals are possible. These dolphins breed throughout the year and so it is usual to see calves with the adults. Other dolphins that are sighted from time to time are Common Dolphins, which occur in schools of 200 to 2 000, and Humpback Dolphins which may be seen singly or in groups of up to 10 animals.
